Cast and Blast: Alice & Baffin Bay Adventure

When you're looking for the ultimate Texas outdoor experience, nothing beats combining two of our state's best pastimes in one action-packed day. This full-day cast and blast trip with Villarreal Guide Services takes you from the legendary waters of Baffin Bay to the prime dove fields around Alice, Texas. We're talking about an 8-hour adventure that starts at 7:00 AM on the water chasing redfish and speckled trout, then transitions at 3:45 PM to heated dove action in some of South Texas's most productive hunting grounds. Perfect for groups of up to four people, this trip delivers the kind of authentic Texas experience that keeps folks coming back year after year.

What to Expect on the Water

Your day kicks off early on Baffin Bay, where the morning bite is typically at its best. We'll launch from one of the premier boat ramps in the area, and I'll have everything ready to go - boat, fuel, bait, and all the tackle you'll need. Baffin Bay is famous for producing some of the biggest speckled trout in Texas, and the redfish here are absolute bruisers. The bay's grass flats and drop-offs create perfect ambush points for these fish, especially during the cooler morning hours. We'll work the structure with live bait and artificials, adjusting our approach based on wind, tide, and what the fish are telling us. The beauty of this fishery is its diversity - one cast might bring in a solid red, the next could be a gator trout that'll have you grinning for weeks. Around mid-afternoon, we'll head back to the dock and make our way to Alice for the second half of your adventure. The dove fields here are legendary, with good water sources and plenty of food plots that keep the birds coming back. You'll need to bring your own shotgun, shells, and hunting license, but I'll get you set up in proven spots where the action stays hot through the evening.

Tactics & Techniques

On the fishing side, we'll be running a mix of live bait and artificial lures depending on conditions. Baffin Bay requires a different approach than your typical coastal fishing - the water's often clearer, the fish are spookier, and presentation matters more than ever. I keep a variety of soft plastics, topwaters, and spoons rigged and ready, plus we'll have live shrimp and croaker when the situation calls for it. The key is reading the water and adjusting quickly. Some days the fish want a slow presentation along the grass lines, other times they're crushing topwaters over the reefs. That's where local knowledge pays off - I've been working these waters long enough to know where the fish hold during different conditions and seasons. For the dove hunting portion, we'll be pass shooting at watering holes and roost sites. These South Texas doves are fast and smart, so shot placement and timing are everything. The fields around Alice offer multiple setups, from tank dams to mesquite senderos, giving us options based on wind direction and bird movement patterns. I'll position each hunter in spots with good shooting lanes and natural cover, then it's up to you to connect when the birds start flying.

Target Species You'll Love

Redfish are the backbone of Baffin Bay fishing, and these copper-colored fighters are what dreams are made of. These fish typically run 24 to 30 inches in our area, with plenty of oversized bulls mixed in that'll test your drag system. Reds are aggressive feeders that hit both artificials and live bait hard, making them perfect for anglers of all skill levels. The best action usually happens during moving water, and they're most active during the cooler months from fall through spring. What makes catching reds so special is their fighting ability - they'll make powerful runs toward structure and never give up until they're in the boat.

Sea Trout, especially the speckled variety, are Baffin Bay's claim to fame. This water system consistently produces some of the largest specks in Texas, with fish over 25 inches being caught regularly. These spotted beauties are structure-oriented fish that love to hang around grass beds, shell reefs, and drop-offs. They're most active during low-light periods and cooler water temperatures, making our early morning start perfect timing. Specks are also incredibly fun to catch on light tackle, offering spectacular jumps and strong runs that'll get your heart pumping.

Southern Flounder are the ultimate ambush predators, lying in wait along sand flats and channel edges before striking with lightning speed. These flatfish can grow quite large in our waters, with keepers typically running 15 to 20 inches. They're most active during cooler months and are particularly fond of live bait presentations bounced along the bottom. Landing a nice flounder is always exciting because they fight differently than other species - using their flat profile to create maximum resistance in the water.

Black Drum are the heavyweights of the bay system, often reaching impressive sizes that'll challenge even experienced anglers. These bottom-dwellers are excellent table fare when caught in the slot limit range, and they provide some serious pulling power during the fight. They're typically found around shell beds and structure, especially during their spawning runs in late winter and early spring. The drum bite can be incredibly consistent once you locate a school.

Sheepshead are the technical challenge of the bunch, requiring precise bait presentation and quick hook-sets to overcome their notorious bait-stealing abilities. These black-and-white striped fish have human-like teeth perfect for crushing crabs and barnacles, their preferred food source. They're typically found around any type of structure - piers, jetties, and shell reefs. Landing a nice sheepshead is always satisfying because they're notoriously difficult to hook, but once connected, they provide a solid fight and excellent eating.

Black Drum

Black drum are the heavyweights of Baffin Bay, typically running 5-30 pounds but capable of hitting 90 pounds. These powerful fish cruise muddy flats, oyster beds, and shallow areas where they crush shellfish with their strong jaws. Spring is prime time when they school up for spawning - that's when you'll hear their distinctive drumming sounds underwater. What guests love most is the fight these fish put up, plus they're excellent eating when under 15 pounds. Larger ones get tough and stringy, so we usually release the big girls. They prefer brackish water and can tolerate huge temperature and salinity swings. Here's my local trick: use fresh soft crab or crushed mussels on the bottom - crabs work best since they don't get picked off by catfish like other baits do.

Black Drum

Redfish

Redfish are the stars of our Baffin Bay trips, easily recognized by their copper-red backs and distinctive black spots near the tail. They typically range 20-35 inches and love cruising super shallow flats where you'll sometimes see their backs out of the water. These fish prefer 1-4 feet of water around oyster reefs, grass beds, and muddy bottoms where they root for crabs and shrimp. Year-round fishing is good, but fall and spring offer the best action when they're most active. What guests love is their powerful runs and the sight-fishing opportunities in skinny water - plus they're fantastic eating with mild, slightly sweet meat. They'll hit everything from topwater plugs to live shrimp. My tip: look for nervous water or wakes in the shallows, then cast ahead of moving fish and work your lure slowly back.

Redfish

Sea Trout

Speckled trout are the bread and butter of our Baffin Bay trips, running 14-24 inches and 1-5 pounds on average. These spotted beauties love grass flats and shallow waters, especially during low-light periods at dawn and dusk. They're most active in spring and fall when water temps are comfortable, though we catch them year-round. What makes them special is their willingness to hit topwater lures and their excellent eating quality - soft, white meat that's perfect for the dinner table. They school up in deeper channels during winter cold snaps, making them easier to target. These fish are aggressive feeders on shrimp, small crabs, and baitfish. My local trick: work topwater plugs and soft plastics over grass beds early morning - the explosive strikes will get your heart pumping every time.

Sea Trout

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are the "convict fish" of our waters with their distinctive black and white stripes, but what really sets them apart are their human-like teeth. They typically run 1-8 pounds and 14-20 inches, though we occasionally see 20-pounders. These structure-loving fish hang around any barnacle-covered pilings, docks, or reefs where they scrape off their favorite meals. Spring spawning season from February through April is when they're most active and easiest to target. Guests enjoy the challenge since they're notorious bait thieves and the reward of excellent table fare - sweet, white meat that's worth the effort to clean. They're picky eaters but fight hard once hooked. My tip: get your bait tight against structure and set the hook aggressively the moment you feel them nibbling - they'll steal your bait otherwise.

Sheepshead

Southern Flounder

These flat, oval-shaped fish are masters of disguise on sandy and muddy bottoms throughout Baffin Bay. They typically run 15-18 inches and around 5 pounds, with both eyes positioned on their left side - a unique sight that always gets guests talking. Southern flounder ambush prey from below, burying themselves in sand or mud until shrimp, crabs, or small fish pass overhead. We target them year-round, but fall and winter months produce the best action as they move toward deeper channels. What makes them special is their incredible camouflage ability and excellent table fare - mild, white meat that's hard to beat. My tip: when drift fishing, work your bait slowly along the bottom in 1-foot increments since they suspend at different depths depending on conditions.
